Overview

This section provides a brief overview on connecting headsets to telephones and why it is important to get this correct.

I will try not to bore you with techo talk.

Corded headsets are usually sold as a top only. YOU must buy something to connect the headset and your telephone. This "something" can be as simple as a direct connect cord or cable through to a full blown acoustic shock protecting amplifier.

Technical Factors To Consider

The primary technical factors to consider are telephone handset wiring, telephone transmitter impedence (receiver impedence is almost universally the same) and sometimes polarity.

Headsets and handsets are connected to your telephone by 4 wires - 2 for transmit and 2 for receive. These wires are connected by either a small square plastic plug and clip called an RJ11 or a small round 2.5mm metal plug. It all depends upon the phone. For the RJ11, the 4 wires are usually in one of two configurations - Transmit Receive Receive Transmit or Receive Transmit Transmit Receive. However, they can occasionally be in other configurations. The 2.5mm plugs are usually wired in a standard format.

Some PABX manufacturers have made their handsets polarity sensitive. This means that the -ve and +ve wires must be the correct way around or the transmitter will not work. Panasonic and even Cisco have telephones that are polarity sensitive in their range.

Your telephone transmitter construction can be old fashioned carbon, electret - most common or dynamic. These constructions can come in a variety of impedences. Many headsets can simply replace the handset in a lot of phones. Other phones require special equipment (e.g. stand-alone amplifier or an amplifier built into the bottom cord) to match the headset with your phone wiring and transmitter impedence.
